The Pineapple Cottage Theatre was once a farmhouse. The owners were the Bruekner family who grew pineapples, along with other produce. When the family moved away from farming, it became a Girl Guide’s ‘hut’ until it was abandoned early in 2022. After months of negotiation with Cassowary Coast Regional Council (CCRC), MATES moved in in July of that year.
The ‘new’ space, given the moniker ‘Pineapple Can Theatre’ due to its cramped dimensions, was quickly changed by ‘decree’ from the senior MATES’ ladies to the more agreeable ‘Pineapple Cottage Theatre’ later that same month.
A ten-year lease agreement between CCRC and Mission Arts was signed off in October and MATES’ first production in the teeny weeny space was our Petite Salon Pièces on 21st September 2022.
