Aladdin and the Magic Lamp marked a bold new chapter for the Mission Arts Theatre Ensemble (MATES), as their most ambitious production to date. With nearly 40 participants involved both on and off the stage, the show became a true community effort. Drawing lessons from the labour-intensive process of Princess Shelly in 2022, the production was staged across two venues over two weekends — a logistically challenging feat that underscored the need for future logistical refinements for large-scale productions.
Excitement for the show ran high, with dazzling costumes designed by Kerri Wigley, captivating choreography by Nicole Jacob, and a vibrant mix of dance, fight sequences, acrobatics, silk routines, and live singing. Enhanced technical equipment brought the production to life, including headset microphones, Fresnel lights, a digital backdrop, and carefully programmed audio and lighting.
Aladdin and the Magic Lamp was a spectacular showcase of talent, creativity, and dedication. From its stunning visuals to its memorable performances, the production not only delighted audiences but also highlighted MATES’ growing ambition and ability to produce high-quality theatre within a local community setting.
