Princess Shelley and the Wicked Witch of the Wild Water

The Production

As part of the Mission Arts Theatre Ensemble’s (MATES) commitment to celebrating local talent and fostering community theatre, Don Sanderson adapted Pam Galeano’s unpublished children’s story, Princess Shelley and the Wicked Witch of the Coral Sea, into a whimsical stage play for families. Retitled Princess Shelley and the Wicked Witch of the Wild Water, this production marked an ambitious step for the fledgling ensemble, building on the momentum of their successful 2021 shows and welcoming an influx of new members.

The play, a magical tale set in the enchanting Kingdom of Shells, was performed across three different venues for its three-show run — an ambitious logistical feat for the growing group. Featuring charming characters such as Dob-Dob the cheeky dolphin, memorable scenes such as the magical floating pearl lights, and engaging storytelling, Princess Shelley and the Wicked Witch of the Wild Water captured the hearts of audiences of all ages.

With this production, MATES proved its ability to deliver ambitious, high-quality theatre while staying true to their mission of community involvement and creativity. The positive reception further solidified their place as a cornerstone of the local arts scene.

Synopsis

In the enchanting Kingdom of Shells, Princess Shelley lives a lonely life by the Coral Sea, forbidden to speak to strangers due to a curse cast by the Wicked Witch of the Wild Water. The curse ensures that if Shelley speaks, the entire kingdom will face destruction. Despite her isolation, Shelley finds joy in the sea's melodies and dreams of companionship.

Her quiet world changes when Prince Dooca, a charming sailor, arrives on a silver yacht accompanied by playful dolphins. Although drawn to him, Shelley cannot break her silence, and their budding friendship remains unspoken. However, the Wicked Witch returns, seeking to ensure Shelley's eternal loneliness by casting her into a shell beneath the sea.

With the help of his dolphin friend Dob-Dob, Prince Dooca embarks on a daring quest to break the witch's spell and rescue Shelley. Facing storms, spells, and the witch’s wrath, the prince uses the power of Shelley's songs and their growing bond to restore peace to the kingdom. In a climactic turn, Shelley makes a wish that transforms the witch and breaks all her curses, reuniting her family and uncovering surprising truths about her connection to Dooca.

Filled with music, magic, and themes of love, persistence, and overcoming obstacles, Princess Shelley and the Wicked Witch of the Wild Water is a heartwarming fantasy adventure perfect for children and family audiences alike.
