Cinderella in LA

The Production

Originally debuting as a 12-minute skit for the El Arish State School Centennial fundraiser at the El Arish Hall, Cinderella in LA quickly proved to be a hit. Due to popular demand, the play was expanded and revised for a second performance as part of a Mission Arts event. This enhanced version became the centrepiece of a dinner-and-show experience at the MARCS Park pavilion. While primarily a MATES’ production, both performances were presented under the Mission Arts Acting Up theatre group.

Synopsis

Set in a hilariously offbeat reimagining of the Cinderella fairy tale, Cinderella in LA transports the classic story to a modern-day Australian village brimming with quirky humour. The play follows Ella, a downtrodden young woman stuck in an asbestos-lined fibro bungalow with her overbearing stepmother, Beryl, and two scheming stepsisters, Sheryl and Pheryl. Saddled with endless chores and outrageous demands, Ella longs for an escape from her dreary existence. When the town announces its highly anticipated LA School Centennial celebrations, Ella's hopes of attending are dashed by her selfish family. Enter her flamboyant Fairy Godmother (or "Fairy-OMG-Mother"), equipped with a frond of golden cane and a cheeky attitude, who transforms Ella into "Tinderella" and sends her off with sparkling thongs and a taxi voucher.

At the celebration, Ella captures the heart of the charming yet rugged Prince Farming, despite her questionable dance moves. But when the clock strikes midnight, she bolts, leaving behind a single thong. Determined to find his mysterious love, Prince Farming embarks on a humorous quest to fit the thong, resulting in chaotic antics and laugh-out-loud moments. Will Ella reclaim her golden thong and win the prince's heart?

Cinderella in LA is a playful, interactive comedy filled with Aussie wit, audience participation, and a tongue-in-cheek take on the classic tale.
