Season of Shorts
Kaboom!

Synopsis

Kaboom! is a lively one-act comedy set during a suburban school trivia fundraiser that spirals hilariously out of control. Amidst petty squabbles, quirky banter, and escalating chaos, two couples and an eccentric mother grapple with the unpredictable hilarity of everyday mishaps — from trivia disasters to chemical cleaning concoctions. With larger-than-life characters and a knack for turning the mundane into the outrageous, this uproarious play culminates in an explosive finale, leaving the school — and the audience — in stitches.

Characters

TY

  • Age: 30–50 years old
  • Personality: Sarcastic, sharp-witted, and cynical. Ty often plays the class clown with his quick quips and biting humour but hides a soft side beneath his antics.
  • Relationships: Married to Di; son of Vi.

DI

  • Age: 30–50 years old
  • Personality: Patient, practical, and level-headed, though often exasperated by Ty's behaviour. Di serves as the voice of reason and peacemaker of the group.
  • Relationships: Married to Ty; daughter-in-law of Vi.

VI

  • Age: 50–70 years old
  • Personality: Eccentric and unpredictable, with a knack for unintentionally causing chaos. She’s amusingly oblivious to the embarrassment she brings her family.
  • Relationships: Ty’s mother or grandmother (adjustable based on casting).

MAGGIE (Pie)

  • Age: 30–50 years old
  • Personality: Sweet but scatterbrained, with a tendency to overshare personal anecdotes. Maggie brings warmth and unintended comedy to the group.
  • Relationships: Jai’s partner.

JAI

  • Age: 30–50 years old
  • Personality: Earnest, pious, and slightly oblivious to social cues, Jai provides a counterbalance to the humour with his serious demeanour and devotion to order.
  • Relationships: Maggie’s partner.

Supporting Details:

  • Depending on the actor’s age, Vi can be played as Ty’s mother or grandmother by substituting “Mum” with “Nan” or an equivalent term.
  • The group dynamic is rich with opposites: Ty’s loud humour contrasts with Jai’s seriousness, and Maggie’s scattered nature offsets Di’s practicality.
