Stage 2 Building Programme - Western Zone

The Mission Beach Aquatic Centre is co-located and immediately to the west of the Mission Arts site. The design of the Aquatic Centre leaves us with a range of opportunities for enhancement of the interfaces between the two facilities.

Integrate Mission Arts and Aquatic Centre entrances

The Mission Arts and Aquatic centres were built several years apart. Their resulting uncoordinated construction has left us with a gaggle of unsightly and duplicated steel fencing, along with a level-difference of 3 steps (~520mm) between our entrance forecourts. We have an accessible ramp and 3 narrow steps adjacent. It is proposed to provide widened steps to integrate our respective entrance areas and provide easy movement between, so as to encourage fluid flow of visitors to each facility.

Extend Mission Arts Gallery Shop

There is a desperate need to provide better space for our admin office, for incoming and outgoing artwork handling and storage, and for expanded Shop display space. Expansion of the Shop (Pod 1) westward into the dead and otherwise useless space between Mission Arts and the Aquatic Centre would provide almost 60% additional floor-space.

Covered entrance walkway

Our existing accessible ramp and adjacent steps are entirely exposed to wind, rain and sun. Not ideal in the wet tropics of Far North Queensland. Similarly, the Aquatic Centre building only provides partial cover of the entrance forecourt area. It is proposed to add a pattered glass cover over the entire entrance walkway area. This will further integrate the Mission Arts and Aquatic entrances. The new roof will also provide a visual link to the freestanding billboard wall.
